*FEATURED ARTIST of the week* ~~AmyEsther~~

Amy Esther

1. What do you create?

Wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery for the home.

2. What led you to take up your craft?

I took a brief apprenticeship with a potter in a tiny village in Africa. I was spending a semester abroad and it was supposed to be a language-learning experience. But I loved throwing on the wheel from the second I started, and immediately signed up for classes when I returned.

3. Which part of your work do you most enjoy?

The feel of the clay in my hands as I shape it into a bowl.

4. Which part do you find hardest?

Patiently waiting days for pieces to dry!

5. Where do you get your inspiration?

From my travels in Africa and my relationships. Many times I am trying to express a feeling or mood.

6. Do you participate in any etsy groups, and if so, which ones?

The Etsy Mud Team

and Interior Design Team.

But I'm so busy, it's hard to keep up!

7. What's one material your shop can't live without?

Clay is too easy an answer, so let's say mattress foam. It's invaluable for making plates and pieces that are fragile before they're fired!

8. What is your favorite item that you have purchased off of Etsy?

I love my octopus tentacle necklace from OctopusMe!

9. If I could sell one item from my shop today, it would be...

My set of two starry night plates! I use plates like these all the time in my studio. I love how they make even a microwave burrito seem special!

10. If I had enough money to pick one item on my wish list from any shop on etsy to buy, it would be...

This really cute polka-dot dress from fraeuleinwunder

11. What are the top three favorite items currently listed in your store?

My dip bowls, my snowy night cups (I'm actually happy no one has bought them...I don't want to be parted!) and my starry night platter.

12. What undiscovered artisans would you recommend the world to know?

I loooove handcrafted jewelry, and I'm a big math and science geek, so I'm a fan of

and daniellejewelry

And Aloka just makes incredible work:

13. What is the best advice you have ever received?

"Never stand between a hippo and water."
