*FEATURED ARTIST of the week* ~~KirstenLovesDinner~~

KirstenLovesDinner

1. What do you create?
I crochet & sew bags, scarves, pet goodies, and accessories. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though; I tend to wander, dabble, and expand my crafts to whatever I’m in the mood to learn.

2. What led you to take up your craft?
My grandma actually; she’s been crocheting the entire family afghans for years and years. I hadn’t realized how much work went into them (hence why they ended up being the dog’s blanket) until I sat down and asked for her to teach me. Gram’s been awesome and patient with me—I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. It’s been 2 years since she taught me; now I’m teaching HER new stitches. I feel like it’s something special between us… our personalities are so diametrically different, and I think it’s a great way for us to find a common ground.

3. Which part of your work do you most enjoy?
Physically my favorite part? Just good ‘ol crocheting. I enjoy the details too; like watching my consistency and making sure every stitch is perfect. Emotionally: Being able to be creative on a daily basis—if I were working a regular part-time job like most people my age, I would be stuck behind a desk, or ringing someone up at Target. I get to harness my talents and create new things, which is why my Etsy is so fulfilling.

4. Which part do you find hardest?
Ugh, hand sewing!

I swear, if I poke myself once, it’s guaranteed I will do it at least 10 more times. The more frustrated I get = more poking my own fingers. It’s a downhill slope.

5. Where do you get your inspiration?
From my pets! I have one dog, and five cats. I make them loads of goodies and whichever ones they like, get duplicated for my store. They’re often my hardest critic. Yes, I know, I’m the crazy pet lady.

But as for my bags & scarves: fabrics and textures. All I have to do is touch a skein of yarn, or study a pattern on a fabric, and I’ll know exactly what project it’s perfect for.

6. Do you participate in any etsy groups, and if so, which ones?
Yes, I’m a member of Etsy For Animals! I’ve been donating to my local SPCA shelter for over a year now. It’s also where I’ve adopted 2 of my kitties (my others being strays), so anything I can give back, I’m happy to do it.

7. What's one material your shop can't live without?
Well, yarn, of course… but my current obsession is canvas. Oh how I love canvas…

8. What is your favorite item that you have purchased off of Etsy?
It has to be this awesome reconstructed shirt from Miscusi:

I’ve worn it so many times it’s starting to come apart. I adore it.

9. If I could sell one item from my shop today, it would be...
My bamboo-yarn Headband/Scarflette

It’s unbelievably soft, plus the colors are very 70-ish.

10. If I had enough money to pick one item on my wishlist from any shop on etsy to buy, it would be...
This is hard… I can’t choose one! I’d say it’s an absolute tie between Emilykatz’s Sweetheart Dress

(it’s so lovely—I think the second I were to put it on, I’d be reading at a café and eating scones)

and LittleRobot’s An Inventors Notebook set

It awakens my inner mad scientist.

11. What are the top three favorite items currently listed in your store?
1) My canvas/yarn hybrid bag. My canvas bags are some of the items I’m most proud of, I think they combine different styles into one bag, and it works rather well.

2) My “Build Your Own” kitty beds. They are the most rewarding thing I make. I love getting pictures of my customer’s cats diggin’ their new beds. Plus it’s great to hear what people name their cats; my personal favorites: Binoo, Henry, Cecil, and Boogie.

3) My alpaca scarflette. It’s surprisingly cozy for how tiny it is. Plus, thinking about alpaca hair makes me giggle.

12. What undiscovered artisans would you recommend the world to know?
Hisss’s shop:

Her stuff is incredible; I hold a special place in my heart for Edgar:

13. What is the best advice you have ever received?
That every part of your Etsy shop—from your store front, to your products, to your shipping—should always retain a touch of your personality. What’s so incredible about Etsy is the personalized nature of everything. We’re not Walmart, we’re people making awesome things.
